Q & A

How Does Visulyzer work?

Visulyzer guides a subject through an electronic series of ocular tests currently in use by law enforcement: the Standard Field Sobriety Test and the Advanced Roadside Impaired Driver Enforcement assessment. As the tests are performed, Visulyzer captures video and data of the subject's respsonses. It analyzes the data, and creates a report of its findings. It provides hard evidence in real-time which is stored and can be referenced at a later time by anyone authorized to do so.

Are the tests accurate?

Yes. The tests yield quantitative data that can be verified on the video. Since the signs of impairment either exist or they don’t, there’s no guesswork.

Does Visulyzer measure the degree of impairment?

No. Visulyzer only looks for signs of impairment as established by The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, These signs only appear when the Central Nervous System (CNS) has been compromised.

Why is the CNS so important?

The CNS controls both cognitive and physical response. When the CNS malfunctions, it causes interference with electrical impulses within the brain and from the brain to the muscles. Reaction time, judgment and physical adeptness, mobility and agility are all affected.

Does Visulyzer require that the eyes be completely enclosed?

No. Visulyzer may be programmed for different venues or applications, but for accuracy, lighting and any other variables must be controlled and constant.

Does Visulyzer require a subject’s head to be immobilized?

Because Positional Alcohol Nystagmus (PAN) can result from tilting the head, during nystagmus testing the subject must face forward, with his/her head aligned with the spine. This can be achieved while the subject is sitting, standing or lying down. Visulyzer provides aural and visual cues for the subject to perform the test properly.

Can testing time be reduced?

Test accuracy requires a minimum of time for a subject’s eyes to adjust and stabilize after changes in lighting. Beyond that, the test procedure and analysis has been optimized to collect, process and report the maximum amount of data in the least amount of time. While the computer clock speed can have a marginal effect, the actual time it takes to administer the test and get results depends on the subject’s ability or willingness to cooperate.

How many tests results can the device store?

Visulyzer uses micro SD cards to run the program and store data. How many tests it can store depends on the size of the cards.

How much marijuana is required to cause impairment?

No standard exists because of individual differences in THC metabolism, use frequency, drug potency and method of ingestion.

What drugs does Visulyzer detect?

Visulyzer detects signs of impairment, not the drugs that caused them. Certain combinations of signs are indicative of a particular category of drug or combination of drugs, but Visulyzer only reports and documents the data it finds. It doesn’t interpret the data or draw conclusions.

Does Visulyzer return false positives or negatives?

No. The CNS can be compromised either by chemicals or by medical causes such as traumatic brain injury or ketoacidosis. In rare cases, to an untrained observer a congenital eye condition may appear to mimic a compromised CNS. Visulyzer is smart enough to tell the difference between medical and chemical impairment, and capable enough to report anomalous muscle behaviors that are inconsistent with either.
